Some have suggested they’re old baseballs, while others claim they could be aliens from outer space (LOL) washing up on the Devon and Cornwall coastlines.
A dog walker who took one home from Long Rock, which is between Penzance and Marazion, was so frightened it would suddenly come to life he threw it away.
‘We want the experts to examine them and let us know if they are safe, because quite frankly they are really weird and a bit scary,’ said Jess Arnieson, 27, who spotted the ‘orbs’ while on holiday in Penzance.
They’re probably the shells of dead ‘sea potatos’ (Echinocardium cordatum).
The species of urchin, which are covered in tiny spines and span around three inches, can be found buried in sand and mud off the British coast.
The ones that came ashore on Wednesday were part of a mass death that could have been the worst in decades.
